WOODBINE CLINIC

A new state of the art facility for pediatric primary care

The Woodbine Clinic was completed in 2018 and serves as the site for Geisinger's largest pediatric primary care clinic as well as our regional Urgent Care Clinic and several outpatient pediatric specialty clinics.  Located just 1.5 miles down the road from the main medical center, the Woodbine Clinic is easily accessible to residents for their Continuity Clinic experience as well as dedicated rotations in Urgent care as well as Pediatric Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Dermatology and Ophthalmology.

GEISINGER'S PEDIATRIC RESIDENTS UTILIZE THE WOODBINE CLINIC FOR THE FOLLOWING ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:

CONTINUITY CLINIC

Pediatric Continuity Clinic is a big part of our residency program.  Our practice is very large, managing the primary care needs of over 14,000 children.  Our faculty and residents share this large population as any group practice would, however, residents are assigned specific patients who they follow throughout their entire residency.  Residents are free to recruit new patients from the newborn nursery, NICU or even the ED or inpatient units if they wish.  Residents can monitor their schedule and communicate with families using EPIC, our integrated electronic health record.  Although all patient care is closely monitored by our faculty, we encourage our residents to truly own their patients’ and be proactive on their behalf.  Resident Continuity Clinic is very satisfying to our resident staff.  Residents are scheduled to see their patients for a half-day each week.  Allowances are made to decrease the frequency of Continuity Clinic during PICU and NICU months where it is sometimes difficult to be free from patient care in the afternoons.  Our residents are scheduled for four to six patients per half-day session.  Our clinic boasts only a 9% no-show rate, much less that the 35-40% no-show rates of clinics at large centers located in major metropolitan areas.  Our Continuity Clinic experiences closely parallel the typical activities and patient care encounters of private practices, allowing our residents to be ready for careers in primary care immediately after graduation.

URGENT CARE CLINIC

The Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic also operates out of the Woodbine facility.  The clinic provides same-day acute care appointments to not only children cared for in our Continuity Clinics, but also as to children managed by other health care providers in the region.  With the exception of major traumatic injuries, all types of urgent visits are seen there.  With radiology services and highly skilled nursing care available on site, the Urgent Care Clinic is a great alternative to seeking care in the emergency room.  Pediatric residents are assigned to the clinic for two blocks each year during their training.  These rotations are great preparation for not only a career in primary care but also further fellowship training in emergency medicine.  In fact, the experience is so robust that our Emergency Medicine Residency Program uses it  as a site to train their residents as well.

PEDIATRIC SUBSPECIALTY ROTATIONS

Several of our partners in pediatric care are run outpatient services at the Woodbine Clinic.  These include Pediatric Sports Medicine, Pediatric Orthopaedics, Pediatric Dermatology and Pediatric Ophthalmology.  Residents who select blocks in these rotations will spend a large part of their time at Woodbine working with faculty in these clinics.
