OUR RESIDENCY FACILITIES
Dedicated Space Designed to Optimize Resident Learning
The Pediatric Residency Suite was opened in 2016 and sits immediately adjacent to clinical areas within the Janet Weis Children's Hospital. The space is close enough to the main units to provide convenient access to lectures, program leadership and residency activities for learners while they are on rotations in the hospital. The suite is far enough away from all the hustle and bustle of the clinical areas that residents are undisturbed during their learning activities. The suite is secured by an ID card access to ensure personal safety and the security of personal belongings.
Main Conference Room
The residency suite houses the program's main conference room. This large space has ample room for all residents as well as a large number of medical students from the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine who are on their pediatric rotations. The classroom is equipped with a state of the art electronic learning infrastructure that permits lectures to be recorded and also live distribution of learning opportunities over a number of web-based platforms for residents who might not be able to attend in person. This same system permits teleconferencing to facilitate lectures from outside speakers, remote faculty, and even real-time discussion with fellow residents and staff in other countries while on Global Health rotations. The lecture hall can be split into two smaller rooms to enable small group activities and workshops.
Resident Workroom
The Resident Workroom is used by residents for number of activities. Its is equipped with fifteen computer workstations that are utilized to write notes and place orders in our EHR. Additionally, residents use them to engage in computer based learning activities, communicate with patients electronically through the MyGeisinger portal and follow-up on personal e-mails.
Resident Lounge
The lounge is the main landing point for residents when they arrive in the hospital every day. The lounge is passcode protected to ensure the safety of personal belongings that might be stored there. Each resident has an individual locker which can be secured if they wish. The space also houses a refrigerator, microwave, Keurig, ice/water station, comfy seating and a large screen television to use when kicking back between shifts or when on call.
Personnel Offices
One of the most important aspects of the suite is that all of our administrative personnel are housed in one place. Residents have access to the Chief Residents, Program Coordinator, Program Director and Associate Program Directors at all times. Our staff enjoy the constant personal involvement with the resident staff that this design offers. This arrangement fosters close relationships between residents and staff, expedites work and permits rapid recognition of any issues long before they become major problems.
