THE GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER
AND
JANET WEIS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
The Geisinger Medical Center is the largest facility providing tertiary and quaternary care in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Geisinger serves over 2.5 million people in the region, including roughly 500,000 children. Geisinger Health includes eleven other hospital facilities, but the location in Danville is the largest and is home to the most technically advanced medical care in the health system. Danville is also home to the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated children’s hospital in the region. Despite Geisinger’s continued growth and expansion, the hospital has not forgotten its roots and highly values its roles as both a large referral center and our regions local community hospital. Scroll through the links below to learn more about our unique history, our main hospital facility, Woodbine campus, and the specific facilities used by our pediatric residency program.
OUR HISTORY
The George F. Geisinger Hospital was opened in May, 1915. It was the vision of Mrs. Abigail Geisinger, a lifetime member of the Danville community. Named after her late husband, the hospital was her way of making sure our region was well cared for long after her passing. THE JANET WEIS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
The Janet Weis Children's Hospital opened in December, 1994. Built completely with philanthropic funds from our local community members, it is the only dedicated children's hospital in all of northeastern and central Pennsylvania. Our children's hospital is a testimonial to the relationship that Geisinger has with the community and how deeply our community cares about its children.
WOODBINE CLINIC
The Woodbine Pediatric Clinic was opened in 2019 and is a state of the art, integrated outpatient facility. Ensuring space for both resident education and clinical work was a major consideration in the design of the facility. The site houses both our Resident Continuity Clinic as well as the regional Pediatric Urgent Care Clinic.
OUR RESIDENCY FACILITIES
The pediatric residency suite was designed with the academic, clinical and personal needs of our residents in mind. The suite was opened in 2016 and contains spaces for large and small classes, workstations, leadership offices and resident relaxation. The suite is located adjacent to the clinical areas of the Children's Hospital, but far enough away to ensure that residents have a secure and quiet place to learn and manage their work and personal needs. Take a closer look at our resident facilities at the link below.
THE AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE INSTITUTE
The ADMI is one of the premier neurodevelopmental institutions in the country. Residents learn from a team of certified neurodevelopmental specialists, medical geneticists and genomic researchers, behavioral specialists, speech and language pathologists, neuroimaging specialists and scientific researchers all working to use cutting edge scientific discoveries to help children with developmental issues. GEISINGER EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS
Geisinger Health operates three emergency departments in the immediate Danville Area. The Geisinger Medical Center in Danville is the home the only dedicated pediatric emergency program in the region and serves as the regional pediatric trauma center. The Geisinger Shamokin Hospital and Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital are community based institutions with busy ED's that care for many pediatric patients and are linked to our pediatric ED program by a unique telehealth system that can be used by our residents when additional support is needed.
JANET WEIS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL - CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA AFFILIATION
In February, 2021, Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia announced an affiliation agreement that will increase access to and further advance the delivery of pediatric health care to families in central and northeast Pennsylvania. The affiliation leverages the combined expertise and infrastructure of the two organizations, ensuring that children in the region receive the right care, at the right time, in the right place, delivered by the best clinical team to meet their medical needs.
Initially focused on increasing access to excellence in quaternary, specialized levels of pediatric care, the affiliation has been expanded to include several distinct agreements aimed at improving pediatric health care for children across the vast spectrum of pediatric disorders. Clinicians from CHOP and Geisinger have begun to collaborate across numerous clinical areas including Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery, Radiology, and Laboratory Services, utilizing enhanced technology powered by virtual connections and electronic medical record (EMR) capabilities. The alliance provides access to CHOP’s expertise in rare and complex diseases, while harnessing Geisinger’s well-established outpatient general and specialty pediatric programs and inpatient services at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.
The affiliation also supports the health care, education and research missions of both organizations.
