VIRTUAL FACILITY TOURS

We realize that it is very important to see a facility when deciding on how to rank residency programs.  We are very fortunate to practice in a new, well-kept facility that provides ample space for patient care and providers.  Unfortunately, we are unable to show you our facility in person.  We have created several videos of the facility, highlighting the areas most commonly used by our resident staff.  Please note that in an effort to reduce inadvertent inclusion of our patients and families in our videos we chose to record these tours in the evening.  Also, our current COVID protection plan limits families from using our common spaces and to close room doors.  This creates a very different environment on our inpatient units, one which we all hope will no longer be the norm in the near future.

Children's Hospital - 2nd Floor

CH2 is an 18 bed Med/Surg unit that typically is used for children 2 weeks of age to about 8 years old.  The unit was specially designed around the developmental abilities and needs of young children and to enhance a family's ability to assist in the care of our patients.  The unit includes a playroom for our children and families, a large outdoor deck that wraps around the hospital and a smaller family convenience area with food supplies and an outdoor balcony space.

Children's Hospital - 3rd floor

CH3 is another 18 bed Med/Surg unit.  It is home for both our Hematology/Oncology ward as well as additional general medical/surgical patients typically between 8 and 18 years old.  The unit includes a playroom for kids and families, a special playroom for neutropenic children, a school room,  and specialized rooms for long-term EEG monitoring.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The PICU is a closed unit that is staffed by ICU faculty 24 hours per day.  It is home to the Kiwanis Heart Center, caring for children who have undergone palliative cardiac surgery.  Additionally, it serves as the site for management of critically ill pediatric trauma victims, as JWCH is the only regional pediatric trauma facility in all of northern Pennsylvania.  Residents work directly with our faculty without the interference of fellows creating considerable opportunity to make treatment plans and perform procedures.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The NICU is the only quaternary care NICU in all of northern Pennsylvania.  Geisinger is also the only site for high-risk obstetrics in the region, making our NICU quite a busy place.  The unit houses 42 beds in an open pod arrangement.  The unit is staffed 24 hours per day by NICU faculty.  There are no fellows in our program, permitting residents to truly own their babies and have an opportunity perform a number of procedures.

Supplemental NICU Video

Since the NICU is an open style unit, it is difficult to create a video tour and still maintain a high level of privacy for our families.  We have included this pre-recorded NICU video which is used to orient families to the unit and the NICU practices.  It shows a number of patient care areas within the unit.

Newborn Nursery/Labor & Delivery

The Newborn Nursery is a relatively new facility that facilitates a rooming-in model to promote family bonding.  Having L&D at the same institution as our children's hospital offers learners lots of opportunity to care for newborns throughout their entire residency.  The unit is a rather busy place, managing both well newborns as well as those requiring prolonged stays for infections, NAS and other conditions.
